Museum Curator

The incumbent of this position serves as a Museum Curator (Asian Pacific American History) in the Division of Work & Industry, within the National Museum of American History (NMAH), Smithsonian Institution (SI). The employee is responsible for carrying out research and publications, developing and managing collections, and exhibitions and providing public service by responding to inquiries regarding the Asian Pacific American experience as it relates to the broad historical sub-fields and collections in the Division of Work & Industry. This includes Asian Pacific American experiences in the history of labor, business, food, technology and the environment.


  • Researches Asian Pacific American history through objects and archival sources from the American colonial era to present.
  • Operates independently to collect and manage large and diverse collections that provide the basis for interpreting Asian Pacific American history.
  • Plans and develops exhibition concepts for showcase and similar exhibitions or as part of a larger exhibition team.
  • Develops and maintains scholarly contacts, lectures at professional meetings, develops and participates in public and other educational programs.

You must meet these basic education requirements:

1. Degree: museum work; or in an applicable subject-matter field.


2. Combination of education and experience — courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.


3. Four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study as shown above.

In addition to the basic requirements above, you may qualify for this position if you possess the Selective Factor and Specialized Experience below:

Selective Factor: Experience working at a scholarly level in the fields of Asian Pacific American history with a research focus and expertise on at least one of the following communities: Chinese, Korean, or Filipino Americans.

In addition to meeting the Selective Factor above, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience.

Specialized Experience: you qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.

For this position specialized experience is defined as researching, collecting, and exhibiting Asian Pacific American material culture and related items in historical context. Experience is demonstrated through a range of research products such as scholarly articles, teaching, lectures, oral histories, archival holding, museum collections, exhibitions, and/or public programming.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
